![]() At the time, though, Tony did not know what he was going to do with this new technology. In the end, though, Tony was able to beat Stane at his own game and come up with a Repulsor Tech node that Tony could implant into his body, giving him the power source of Stane but without the instability. He was a man who lived for being the smartest guy in the room. Tony is not used to being the guy who sees technology move faster than he can react, so Stane's use of his repulsor technology was a huge blow to Tony's ego and sense of self-worth. Tony was shocked not that Stane would be so cruel - Tony was used to the villainy of the world - but that Stane had innovated so much further than Tony had. He turned it into a small power source that he used to create a series of suicide bombers who had the repulsor technology essentially stitched into their body it would thus create a huge energy explosion and turn them into living bombs. The other problem was that Tony did not have a complete back-up drive of his mind to swap in when he wiped out his current form, so he lost a lot of memories.Īt the start of Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man run, Ezekiel Stane revolutionized the technology of the world when he retro-fitted Tony Stark's repulsor technology. The Extremis, though, maintained the database that Tony needed wiped, so he had to expel Extremis from himself, even if it meant momentarily killing himself. He could then bring it out of his bones to the surface with just a moment's thought. He had a direct interface with his armor as it was now installed in his very bone marrow. What it did was essentially re-write Tony's genetic code so that he was now a very literal Iron Man, as his body was made of his armor. Tony ended up stopping the spread of the Extremis virus and then ended up injecting himself with a modified version. The problem was that it only worked with a select group of people. You see, during Warren Ellis' short but influential run on Iron Man, he introduced the concept of the Extremis Virus, a super soldier serum that was designed to alter people's genes and turn them into super-strong beings with a variety of powers. The memory dump had to do with the Extremis virus. Osborn, of course, sent agents to capture Tony before he could dump all of his memories. That was the only way that he could make sure that he was eliminating all of the secrets that he did not want Norman Osborn to access. He erased it all from S.H.I.E.L.D., but the information was still in his own brain, which was modified by the Extremis virus, so Iron Man had to literally expel all of the information from his brain, which made him lose his memories and his intelligence as time went by. and suddenly Iron Man knew that he could not promise that the data would be safe anymore. Then Norman Osborn took control of S.H.I.E.L.D. Understanding that fear, Iron Man became the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., so that he could make sure that their private information was safe. One of the concerns of the heroes who refused to register is that they did not trust the government to handle their secret identities. He fought against other superheroes, like Captain America, to argue that the government needed to have superheroes register with the government for the world to be a safer place. It was also in looking at the design of the Iron Man armor in the movie that Fraction eventually came up with the idea of the Bleeding Edge armor.ĭuring Civil War, Iron Man became the face of the Pro-Registration movement in the Marvel Universe. ![]() ![]() The arc reactor, though, played a major role in Fraction's series and he used that to revolve around the introduction of newly developed repulsor technology designed by Zeke Stane (son of old Iron Man rival, Obadiah Stane) that changed the technology of the Marvel Universe. Therefore, Fraction based a lot of his plots around working Pepper into the series after he had previously used her on the short-lived series, The Order. He just had seen enough from the film to know that Iron Man's arc reactor would play a role and that obviously Pepper Potts was going to be a big part of it. In other words, he did not actually have any special insight into the plot of the film when he began writing his series. The fascinating thing about writer Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man, which started the storyline that eventually led to the Bleeding Edge armor, is that Fraction was working on just a basic understanding of what the Iron Man movie would be about when he launched his series. ![]()
